Convert between standard, mini, micro, and nano lots. Plus: see the notional exposure on a standard contract, because 1.0 lots on gold is not 1.0 lots on EURUSD.

Lot sizes in MT5 — a quick refresher

  • Standard lot = 1.0 lots = 100,000 units of the base currency (for FX).
  • Mini lot = 0.1 lots = 10,000 units.
  • Micro lot = 0.01 lots = 1,000 units. Most retail brokers' minimum.
  • Nano lot = 0.001 lots = 100 units. Rare; some ECN brokers only.

Metal and crypto contracts are different

XAUUSD (gold) has a standard lot = 100 troy ounces. XAGUSD (silver) = 5,000 oz. BTCUSD at most brokers = 1.0 BTC per lot. Don't assume a "1.0 lot gold" position is comparable to "1.0 lot EURUSD" — notional exposure can differ by 5-10x.

EA trap: Copying an EA preset across pairs without recomputing lots is the #1 cause of surprise drawdowns. A 0.10 lot preset that's safe on EURUSD is often 3-5x too aggressive on XAUUSD.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trade less than 0.01 lots?

Some ECN brokers (Exness, Tickmill) support nano lots (0.001). Most retail brokers cap at 0.01 micro.

What's 0.10 lots on XAUUSD worth?

0.10 lots × 100 oz = 10 oz exposure. At $2,400/oz that's $24,000 notional — roughly 10x larger exposure than 0.10 lots on EURUSD at 1.10.
